Suggesting Kathleen Kennedy’s determined to wipe the slate clean, so to speak, of the old guard’s “Star Wars” efforts, and in time for the release of “Star Wars Episode 7” and the umpteen other new projects Lucasfilm has in the works that presuppose to add new shine to the well-worn brand, the company has announced they’re ending “Star Wars : The Clone Wars”. The animated series, shown on The Cartoon Network, will cease adventure story telling at Season 5.

After five highly successful and critically acclaimed seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, we feel the time has come to wind down the series. While the studio is no longer producing new episodes for Cartoon Network, we’re continuing production on new Clone Wars story arcs that promise to be some of the most thrilling adventures ever seen. Stay tuned for more information on where fans can soon find this bonus content. In the video below, Supervising Director Dave Filoni offers a peek of what is to come in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
In addition to the ‘bonus content’ “Clone Wars” that lie ahead, whatever that may be, the company says they’ll be doing a new animated series fixing on a time period in the “Star Wars” universe that hasn’t been touched upon before.
Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming. We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming. You can expect more details in the months to come.
For the moment, Lucasfilm have also pressed pause on their planned ‘Star Wars’ comedy series, “Star Wars Detours”, which Seth Green’s team were involved in.
Some speculate that cost, being that “Clone Wars” cost a bit to produce, might have been the reason for the cancellation, but what’s likely more the case is that Disney, who now own the “Star Wars” brand, want to do their own thing – and have it air on their DisneyXD channel.
Being that “The Clone Wars” was one of the most received “Star Wars” projects of the past decade, it’s a sad day for fans. Still, one can only hope what’s ahead is bigger and better and will get us even more excited for the 2015 release of “Star Wars Episode VII”.
No more episodes of “Star Wars : The Clone Wars” will be produced following its current season, its fifth.
