Steven Seagal doing sequel to one of his classic hits!

It’s not a new “Under Siege” (but we may be one step closer to it now), but this will still be music to the ears of Steven Seagal’s most dyed-in-the-wool fans.

The iconic action star is returning to the role of Nico Toscani in a sequel to his ’80s classic – and big breakthrough movie – “Above the Law”.

The 1988 actioner, directed by Andrew Davis (who coincidentally directed the aforementioned “Under Siege”), told of a a martial-arts expert and former CIA agent, Nico Toscani (Seagal) who is working as a Chicago cop when a relatively routine drug-trafficking investigation leads to an international conspiracy. Soon Nico and his partner, Delores “Jax” Jackson (Pam Grier), are the targets of mysterious and powerful criminals, but he refuses to back down. As Nico gets deeper into the case, he must contend with an old adversary: corrupt CIA operative Kurt Zagon (Henry Silva). It was an early film for a pre-“Basic Instinct” Sharon Stone.

Seagal announced “Above the Law 2” on his official Twitter account this week, noting that it’s a film “27 years in the making”. Seagal will produce the film via his prod co Steamroller Productions, with chief of staff Woodie Mister spearheading the sequel.

No word yet on Davis is involved, or whether the new film go out – like the first did – through Warner Bros (I’d think it’d have to?), but guess we’ll hear more – on the Twittersphere? – soon.

Meantime Seagal remains busy with new release “The Perfect Weapon” and has “Cyborg Nemesis : The Dark Rift”, “Contract to Kill”, “End of a Gun” and “Attrition”, which Seagal will also direct, all coming up. But I think it’s fair to say both fans and non-fans of the man will be most pumped to see him sequelize some of these earlier films of his – like “Above the Law”. Hopefully Casey Ryback rears his head again one day too, and maybe Mason Storm (“Hard to Kill”) – who, of course, would be… Harder to Kill… these days.
