Taylor Lautner’s upping his street cred with a new indie by Milk‘s Gus Van Sant

Ab-tastic “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner is stretching his wings- he’ll star in a new indie film by acclaimed director Gus Van Sant.

THR says it will be based on a non-fiction article written in The New Yorker that Lautner has chosen to be scripted into a low-budget feature- oh, and he’ll also produce as well.

You may recall a little while ago the gossip mags went into overdrive after GQ magazine asked Taylor Lautner if he was hit on while having dinner with Gus Van Sant and Dustin Lance Black? Yeah, it looks like this is the outcome of that dinner meeting instead.

Gus Van Sant has been nominated for 2 Academy Awards for “Milk” and “Good Will Hunting”, and has just released “Restless” starring Mia Wasikowska.

While Lautner recently had a bit of a dud with the action movie “Abduction”, after obvious box office success with the Twilight movies.

What do you think, is this a good move for Taylor Lautner, to give him some street cred?
