The Girl in the Spider’s Web in development with Alicia Vikander to replace Rooney Mara?

Sony is developing it’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” series, but isn’t following up the first film with the sequel.

Instead, the studio is going ahead with an adaptation of “The Girl in the Spider’s Web”, not the second, nor the third, but the fourth book in the series. And while considered the fourth book in the series, “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” is the first to be not written by creator Stieg Larsson, instead penned by David Lagercrantz after Larsson passed.

Furthermore, according to THR, stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, and director David Fincher, will not return, with the studio seeing the new book as an opportunity to to start the franchise over.

Meanwhile, a story over at The Wrap suggests that Alicia Vikander is an early favourite the lead role, replacing Mara as Lisbeth Salander.

Sony is in early talks with Steven Knight to adapt the script with Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal and Elizabeth Cantillon on board to produce with Yellow Bird.
