The studio that reinvented Batman, wants to do the same to Fletch!

Many, many years ago it was announced that Miramax were rebooting the “Fletch” movie series – the ’80s comedy, starring Chevy Chase was based on a best-selling series of books by Gregory McDonald – with Bob & Harvey tapping Kevin Smith (then a bit of a favourite with the Weinstein Brothers) on directing duties.

For years Miramax tried to get the film off the ground but for one reason or another (The Weinsteins unremittingly vetoed Kevin Smith’s choices for the lead role – namely Jason Lee – for one; last name mentioned in relation to the role was then “Scrubs” star Zach Braff) it kept stalling.

Warner Bros now have the rights to the “Fletch” books, and plan to make, says THR, a “smart action comedy that plays out on a bigger canvas than the previous movies.”

The “Fletch” books aren’t half as silly (and the title character isn’t so much into the ‘disguises’ that the Chevy Chase incarnation insisted on) as the films, so no surprise that Warner would want to do something a little closer in tone to McDonald’s original yarn.

Who’s your pick for Fletch? Think Warner should stick with Zach Braff?
