Hollywood mega-star Tom Hanks will make his Broadway debut in the late Nora Ephon’s “Lucky Guy”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Set in 1980’s New York, the production follows the highs and lows of the career of controversial tabloid reporter Mike McAlary.
A longtime tabloid fixture who began his media career covering the police beat for the “New York Daily News”, McAlary cast a fascinating figure for Ephron, whose career began in newspaper journalism. Her play chronicles the reporters rise, fall and subsequent return to glory after his Pulitzer-Prize-winning coverage of NYPD’s brutalization of Abner Louima in Brooklyn in 1997. McAlary later died of colon cancer at the age of 41.
Ephron and Hanks have had a long friendship and professional association, with Hanks starring in Ephron’s stand-out rom-coms “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993) and You’ve Got Mail (1998).
George C. Wolfe will direct the production, with the production team including Colin Callendar, Roy Furman, Arielle Tepper Madover, Roger Berlind, Stacey Mindich, Robert Cole and Frederick Zollo.
“Lucky Guy” will begin preview performances in early March 2013 at the Broadhurst Theatre, with a limited engagement for an official opening announced to begin in April 2013. Additional casting is yet to be announced.
