Uhura takes Centre Stage

“Star Trek” snags Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana will go where only woman has gone before – that’d be Nichelle Nichols – for J.J Abrams’ new “Star Trek” prequel.

The actress – who I believe first caught my attention as one of the pushed little daises of “Centre Stage” (2000) and later, “The Terminal” and “Guess Who” – will wear the Starfleet Uniform of Uhura in the motioned pictorial.

In the original “Star Trek” TV series, Uhura – which means freedom in Swahili — was a member of the bridge crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise who rose to the rank of commander. Nichelle Nichols played the Starfleet Academy alum in the series, says Variety.

It’s going to be a big year for Saldana – first James Cameron’s “Avatar”, now “Trek”. She’ll be doing science-fiction conventions until she’s old and weak bladdered!
