Universal prepping Fifty Shades Darker

Convinced it’ll make more than the clown does on McHappy day, Universal are greasing the wheels on – the follow-up to a movie that’s not due until 2015 – the “50 Shades of Grey” sequel, according to Tracking Board.

The thinking is, the sooner they get a workable script, the sooner the film can move into production. Franchises like this seem to run out of steam and popularity pretty quickly these days, so the studio wants to get a jumpstart on things before the inevitable waning of the novelty kicks in.

Seems original writing troupe Kelly Marcel, who adapted the screenplay from the E.L James novel, and polishers Mark Bomback and Patrick Marber are off. Uni have stamped “50 Shades Darker” an ‘open writing call’ – meaning anyone who can yield a keyboard has a chance at crafting the sequel script.

It’s not yet known whether director Sam Taylor-Johnson will be back behind the lens; guess it depends on what sort of experience she has on this first instalment in the sexcapade Olympics.

Guaranteed to reprise their positions though are “Shades” stars Jamie Dorman and Dakota Johnson, back as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.

Here’s the rundown for “50 Shades Darker” :

Daunted by the singular tastes and dark secrets of the beautiful, tormented young entrepreneur Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele has broken off their relationship to start a new career with a Seattle publishing house.

But desire for Christian still dominates her every waking thought, and when he proposes a new arrangement, Anastasia cannot resist. They rekindle their searing sensual affair, and Anastasia learns more about the harrowing past of her damaged, driven and demanding Fifty Shades.

While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront the anger and envy of the women who came before her, and make the most important decision of her life.
