Caffeinated Clint
We’ve been following the uphill plight of the “Mortal Kombat” reboot for a few years now. At last glance, our buddy Christopher ‘Mink’ Morrison was scripting and directing duties for a new movie based on the classic video-game series (you can read about the plans he had for the film here), but with the success of Kevin Tanchorean’s online “Mortal Kombat Rebirth ” shorts, no surprise to hear Warner Bros have now handed over the winner sash to him. It was announced earlier today that “Fame” director Tanchorean will be directing the new big-screen “Mortal Kombat”. His partner Oren Uziel will write the script.
The L.A Times reports that Warner’s New Line label is teaming with it’s video game division to bring the movie to fruition. Assumingly, the film will take it’s cue from the online shorts – which presented the world and characters of ‘Mortal Kombat’ in a more grounded, realisitc setting as opposed to the films that came before.
“The new game and the online shorts prompted us to consider a reboot of a brand we hadn’t been actively thinking about,” New Line’s Toby Emmerich said.
It’s not yet known whether the actors from the shorts, including Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion), and Lateef Crowder (Baraka), will reprise their roles for the big screen venture. Guessing most will want to, but Warner may insisit on a couple of marquee names to ease any concerns that the film may flipflop at the cinema.
