Warner’s Akira gets back up, with Jaume Collet-Serra returning to direct

Jaume Collet-Serra will direct the long-gestating “Akira” movie after all.

The movie, based on the classic anime of the same name, stalled in 2012 when the film’s budget spiraled out of control.

According to Variety, the project is now set to get back underway – complete with newly revised, downsized budget.

Though they considered other directors – especially ones who weren’t originally hoping to shoot the movie for $80m – the studio went back to Collett-Serra (“Unknown”), whose vision for the film they reportedly always loved.

It’s not known whether Garrett Hedlund, who was originally attached to star, will be back; his schedule is looking pretty chocas, particularly late 2014, when Warner hope to shoot.

Set in New Manhattan, “Akira” follows the leader of a biker gang who must save his friend, discovered with potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities, from government medical experiments.
