Despite previous reports suggesting that William Shatner will definitely be inserted into J.J Abram’s “Star Trek” sequel (reprising his role as an old-in-the-tooth Captain James T.Kirk), if only because they couldn’t get him to join original cast member Leonard Nimoy for the first in the rebooted movie series, it’s now being reported that Abrams will not be using any of the original “Star Trek” icons for the sequel. Seems Abrams wants his film to stand-alone without the support and assistance of those beloved familiar faces.

The last “Star Trek” film featured Leonard Nimoy as Spock. But sources close to the next film, many of whom worked with Abrams on the new “Mission Impossible,” confirmed for me last night that none of the originals has been invited back this time. “MI4″‘s Simon Pegg, who now plays Scotty (original Scotty, James Doohan, is in space heaven now with original Bones, DeForrest Kelly), quipped, “That would involve time travel. And if the real Scotty showed up, that would be something.”
Meanwhile, Abrams has confirmed (via MTV) that the “Star Trek” sequel will indeed be released in 3D – but they’re converting it, not filming it in 3D.
We’re shooting on film, 2D, and then we’ll do a good high-end conversion like the Harry Potter movie and all that. Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right, because if you rush it, it never looks good…We were talking about [shooting in IMAX] and I would love to do it. IMAX is my favorite format; I’m a huge fan.
After being bowled over by the IMAX pins on “Mission : Impossible Ghost Protocol”, I’d love to see “Star Trek 2” go IMAX – much more-so than 3D. What about you guys?
