Blumhouse has wanted to get their hands on the “Scream” franchise for quite some time – and why wouldn’t they, right!?
Company chief Jason Blum has said as much in interviews, suggesting if it weren’t for all the red-tape he has to chew through (like “Halloween”, the rights belong to others) his shingle would have punched out a “Scream” reboot by now.
In a new interview with Cinema Blend, the “Happy Death Day” and “Halloween” producer reiterated his interest in bringing Wes Craven’s terrifically witty slasher series back to theaters.
The outlet specifically asked whether Blumhouse might consider doing something with the “Scream” and “Hellraiser” franchises – both of which were previously housed under the Weinstein label Dimension.
“Yes, we definitely have [discussed it]”, Blumhouse, out plugging his new flick “Happy Death Day 2 U”, said. “We’re looking – there’s nothing happening with either one of those things – but we’re definitely looking at it, and it’s definitely something I’d be open to.”
Consider the gazillion dollars his “Halloween” reboot made, no surprise that Jase wants to get some of those other classic horror franchises back into the multiplex. Poppa needs a new boat.
The last “Scream” sequel, “Scream 4”, was released in 2011; The “Hellraiser” sequels haven’t really, ever stopped – just last year another hit the shelves.
While there’s been several attempts over the years to do a big, bad “Hellraiser” film for the big screen, nothing has really eventuated. And in terms of a fifth “Scream” film, everything seemed to come to a complete stop on that when the figures for “Scream 4” weren’t as high as the W’s had originally hoped for. After the death of franchise daddy, the beloved Wes Craven, a new film seemed unquestionably and definitively a no-go zone.
Kevin Williamson, writer of the franchise, told ET Online a couple of years ago that plans for more “Scream” sequels were shelved after the world lost Wes.
“Wes and I, when we were starting Scream 4, we had plans for Scream 5 and 6,” Williamson said. “Now without Wes, I feel like you have to sort of answer the questions of how and why, and I don’t know how to do it without Wes and I don’t know why to do it.”
Indeed. It would be damn tough.
