Pitt shuffle : Ad Astra postponed, Hollywood heads to Cannes

While Fox postpones the release of their film with the A-lister, Brad Pitt’s Tarantino-0uting gets an early bow at Cannes.

Science-fiction adventure movie “Ad Astra”, starring Pitt as a man searching for his missing dad in space, has been dropped from Fox’s release schedule just three weeks shy of its Memorial Day weekend release.

Since Disney took over Fox in March, there have been no assets or promo released for the film, let alone a trailer. Disney CEO Cathleen Taff did tell attendees at CinemaCon last month that the studio would be moving around distribution dates on some of its titles.

James Gray () directed “Ad Astra”, from a script he co-wrote with Ed Gross; it also stars Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Jamie Kennedy, and Donald Sutherland.

Meantime, the Cannes Film Festival has officially announced the addition of Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” to it’s line-up.  While the Pitt/Leonardo DiCaprio starrer was anticipated to be a highlight of the fest early on it wasn’t included in Cannes’ official selection announcement on April 18.

At the time, Tarantino hadn’t finished post-production on the film, explains Artistic director Thierry Fremaux.

“We were afraid the film would not be ready, as it wouldn’t be released until late July, but Quentin Tarantino, who has not left the editing room in four months, is a real, loyal and punctual child of Cannes!” Fremaux said Thursday. “Like for ‘Inglourious Basterds,’ he’ll definitely be there – 25 years after the Palme d’Or for ‘Pulp Fiction’ – with a finished film screened in 35mm and his cast in tow.” Fremaux described the film as a “love letter to the Hollywood of his childhood, a rock music tour of 1969, and an ode to cinema as a whole.”

The movie is predicted to premiere May 21 to mark the 25th anniversary of “Pulp Fiction’s” world premiere at the festival.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” opens to general release in July.
