Disney-Sony Standoff eliminates Spider-Man from the MCU

Update! Sony has issued a response to the situation, confirming that they’re no longer in business with Feige on “Spider-Man” but hope that the situation might change down the track.

“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film,” A Sony spokesperson tells Deadline. “We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”

Disputes between Disney and Sony have left Spider-Man without a home, meaning that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will no longer produce any films with the superhero.

Per Deadline, a dispute that has taken place over the past few months at the top of Disney and Sony has essentially nixed Feige, and the future involvement of Marvel from the Spider-Man universe.

This doesn’t mean we won’t see any more “Spider-Man” flicks, it just means that Feige will no longer be the lead creative producer for the films, and Marvel won’t be involved. Basically it all comes down to money: Marvel no longer have a co-financing stake going forward.

Reportedly there are two more Spidey films in the pipeline with director Jon Watts and star Tom Holland attached – however Watts currently has no deal in place.

This certainly is a shame for Marvel, with Feige producing two recent record-breaking films: “Avengers: Endgame” the highest grossing film of all time, and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” the highest-grossing film for Sony Pictures, overtaking James Bond’s “Skyfall”.
