A new “Star Wars” trilogy from “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss is off.
The duo reportedly walked away from the post-Skywalker film series – that would’ve kicked off in 2022 – because their schedule is full with projects for Netflix.
“We love Star Wars,” the pair said in a statement to Deadline. “When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.”
Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy hinted in a statement that she hopes to have Benioff and Weiss involved in something “Star Wars” down the line.
“David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers,. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”
In August, the up-and-comers signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix. The projects they’re doing for the streamer have left very hours in the day to do anything else, the duo said.
“There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects,” thepair said in a statement to Deadline. “So we are regretfully stepping away.”
