What’s On at the Movies this Week?

School holidays are still in full swing, so if you’re hearing the endless tones of “I’m borrrreeed” you have two options – take the kids to the movies, or drop them at Grandma’s and escape to the movies yourself for a date night or even just a quiet time alone for 2 hours. It’s a great idea, you can thank me later.

So what should you see? Check out what’s new at the cinemas this week:

You’ve probably seen Russell Crowe as Roger Ailes in the limited series “The Loudest Voice”, but be sure to check out “Bombshell” with John Lithgow playing the infamous head of Fox News. The powerhouse trio of Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie is worth it alone, but also keep an eye out for Aussie brothers Josh and Ben Lawson playing the Murdoch brothers.

Based on the real scandal, “Bombshell” is a revealing look inside the most powerful and controversial media empire of all time and the explosive story of the women who brought down the infamous man who created it.

Dolittle

Robert Downey Jr. electrifies one of literature’s most enduring characters in a vivid reimagining of the classic tale of the man who could talk to animals: Dolittle. After losing his wife seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle (Downey), famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria’s England, hermits himself away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company. But when the young queen (Jessie Buckley, Wild Rose) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures. The doctor is joined on his quest by a young, self-appointed apprentice (Dunkirk’s Harry Collett) and a raucous coterie of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla (Oscar® winner Rami Malek), an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck (Oscar® winner Octavia Spencer), a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich (The Big Sick’s Kumail Nanjiani) and an upbeat polar bear (John Cena, Bumblebee) and a headstrong parrot (Oscar® winner Emma Thompson), who serves as Dolittle’s most trusted advisor and confidante.

To do that, he’ll need the help of aspiring engineer, Mandy (Anastasia Bampos), wise-cracking best mate Colin (Darius Amarfio-Jefferson) and mysterious mentor, Patrick (Richard Roxburgh). The Biggest Little Farm

Awww more cute animals! A testament to the immense complexity of nature, “The Biggest Little Farm” follows two dreamers and a dog on an odyssey to bring harmony to both their lives and the land. When the barking of their beloved dog leads to an eviction notice from their tiny LA apartment, John and Molly Chester naively make the choice to move to the country to build a sustainable farm. The land they’ve chosen, however, is utterly depleted of nutrients and suffering from a brutal drought.

“The Biggest Little Farm” chronicles eight years of daunting work and outsized idealism as they attempt to create an utopia of 10,000 orchard trees, over 200 different crops and animals of every kind – including an unforgettable pig named Emma and her best friend, Greasy the rooster. As their plan to create perfect harmony takes a series of wild turns, they realise that to survive they will have to reach a far greater understanding of the intricacies and wisdom of nature, and of life itself.

Beautifully capturing the remarkable scale of the journey and featuring unforgettable characters of both the two and four-legged variety, “The Biggest Little Farm” is an inspiring and educational story for the whole family.
