Abrams’ Star Trek 4 removed from release schedule

Likely has a lot to do with Matt Shakman departing the project

Chris Pine as Captain Kirk

Last we heard Matt Shakman had exited Paramount’s Star Trek sequel for Marvel’s Fantastic Four reboot.

Seems the WandaVision director’s departure from the Bad Robot-produced Trek follow-up has temporarily derailed the project, which had been dated to hit theaters on Dec. 22, 2023.

The new film, expected to see Chris Pine back as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Karl Urban as Bones, John Cho as Sulu and Simon Pegg as Scotty, was one of several Star Trek projects being eyed at the studio. Another, devised by Quentin Tarantino, has also been considered.

This untitled Trek project, which was reportedly set to film by the end of the year, also hadn’t secured the cast at the time – suggesting negotiations with the ensemble might also have held up the film’s production schedule.
