While it’s unlikely they’d even want to announce something like recasting the lead of The Flash for a sequel considering the first film is only weeks away now, director Andy Muschietti is responding to suggestions the headline-making Ezra Miller mightn’t be back as the character.
While Miller is getting rave reviews for their performance in the tentpole, those abuse allegations and legal issues haven’t helped the actor’s case when it comes to remaining gainfully employed. If James Gunn and Peter Safran’s newly-rebooted DCU decides to keep Miller’s incarnation of Barry Allen after The Flash (2023), for a sequel, spin-off or what-have-you, it won’t be with a different actor wearing the red suit.
In an upcoming episode of The Playlist’s The Discourse podcast, Muschietti says Miller will be back “If [a sequel] happens. I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it. And, as you said, the two Barrys – it feels like a character that was made for them.”
Barbara Muschietti added, “In principal photography, Ezra was brilliant and the most committed and the most professional [actor]. Ezra gave everything for this role – physically, creatively, emotionally. They were absolutely supreme.”
Worlds collide in The Flash when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?
