Schwarzenegger’s next film is Cry Macho; also circling Twins 2?

After talk of “The Last Stand” and “The Tomb” being the first out of the gate, it’s been revealed that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s next film will actually be “Cry Macho”, the Brad Furman directed drama about a widowed horse breeder and young charge.

The film was first mentioned here a couple of weeks ago and with, not surprisingly, an echoing chorus of sighs from readers.

Still, Schwarzenegger knows what he’s doing… I’m sure.

Deadline says ”The final agreed-upon payday for Schwarzenegger, I’m told, is $12.5 million plus 25% first dollar gross, slightly up from last week’s negotiating position which already was top dollar money” so it’s fair to say Schwarzenegger will be able to afford a few stogies, maybe even a couple of Hummers, after the flick wraps.

The storyline of “Cry Macho” is :

A horse breeder who won the Kentucky Derby but whose wife and child get killed. He sinks into an alcoholic depression and winds up working for a hedge fund jerk who offers him a choice of getting fired or bringing back the rich guy’s son living with the ex-wife in Mexico. Unexpected plot twists ensue, including an Arnold-and-kid road trip back home.

“Cry Macho” is quite the departure for Schwarzenegger, one I don’t think she’d be making at the moment – not when he’s just re-entered the acting game; Schwarzenegger really needs to come out with something first that is a guaranteed money-spinner, like a sequel to one of his earlier hits or a bonafide action extravaganza.

Meanwhile, What’s Playing is reporting that one of the many sequels (we’ve heard he’s also been offered “Predator” and “Running Man” sequels and is attached to a fifth “Terminator”) Schwarzenegger may be circling is a sequel to his 1988 hit “Twins”.

This isn’t so surprising…

You’ll recall we were the first to report – in January, several weeks before another outlet got wind of the news – that a new Arnold Schwarzenegger-led Justin Lin-directed Terminator was in the works (though, to be fair, we were skeptical). Well that same source tells us today that Terminator Bites the Dust (or whatever they call the thing!) mightn’t be the only other sequel Schwarzenegger has been offered (Though the former’s definitely the more exciting possibility, I will say).

Here’s the word :

“A Twins sequel. Knowing Arnold, Danny De Vito and Ivan Reitman are all still in touch and want to work together again, Universal came to them about it. It’s a germ of an idea that could spread fast.”

Will it happen? Anyone’s guess, particularly with the amount of projects Schwarzenegger is being offered, but clearly Universal – who have also expressed interest in T5 – wants on the Schwarzenegger comeback train.

I know the project isn’t exactly King Conan but Twins 2 does make sense – albeit mainly financially, but still, it does. For one, a sequel would be a sure money-maker, just as the original film was when it hit cinemas in 1988. Secondly, it’s not an action movie and thus it doesn’t matter that Schwarzenegger and De Vito have aged, in fact their maturity might path the way for fresh jokes. It’s also something that could probably be shot fairly quickly and without much prep and then released shortly after or sandwiched between whatever action project Schwarzenegger makes.

Funny thing is “Twins 2” would probably be more of a surebet than “Cry Macho”; as for what will the better film though….?
