Fourth Starship Troopers movie officially announced; coming to cinemas 2012

About a year after our first and last mention of it, Sony has announced a new “Starship Troopers” movie. Now in this day and age, one would assume the new film would take the form of a reboot or remake or rip-off (or whatever they’re calling them this week) but fortunately, that’s not the case; “Starship Troopers : Invasion” is a CGI sequel to the previous three flicks and better still, “Troopers” scribe (and “Troopers 3” helmer) Ed Neumeier is executive producing, as is series star Casper Van Dien. Half of a chance of it turning out Ok then?

The official site for the film has opened and while it doesn’t showcase much, it does offer up some terrific cover art. You can check that out above.

The movie, said to be out Summer 2012, is currently in production in Japan, with Shinji Aramaki directing.

The storyline reportedly involves the character of Carl Jenkins, played by Neil Patrick Harris in the 1997 original.

Official Synopsis :

A distant Federation outpost Fort Casey comes under attack by bugs. The team on the fast attack ship Alesia is assigned to help the Starship John A. Warden stationed in Fort Casey evacuate along with the survivors and bring military intelligence safely back to Earth. Carl Jenkins, now ministry of Paranormal Warfare, takes the starship on a clandestine mission before its rendezvous with the Alesia and goes missing in the nebula. Now, the battle-hardened troopers are charged with a rescue mission that may lead to a much more sinister consequence than they ever could have imagined….

The big news is, unlike the previous two “Troopers” films, this one is going to be a theatrical release.
