Gale Anne Hurd planning X-Files-esque TV series Area 51

Producer Gale Anne Hurd (“Hulk”, “The Terminator”) seems to have been keen on doing something in the ‘alien invasion’ realm for a while now. At one stage she was talking about remaking an earlier film she produced, “Alien Nation” (1988), and while that still might be the case, she’s got a TV series featuring the antenna gang too.

According to Deadline, the long-time producer of film and television – she currently executive produces AMC’s “The Walking Dead” – have optioned Annie Jacobsen’s book ”Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base” for a potential TV series.

Karl Gadjusek, who wrote the upcoming Tom Cruise flick “Oblivion”, would adapt the book for the small screen.

The hourlong project, which will be taken out to the networks shortly, will be written by feature scribe Karl Gajdusek. It will follow two men working on the base who are thrust into danger when they uncover secrets that the government will protect at any cost. Gajdusek, who was brought in by Valhalla executive Beatrice Springborn, will serve as showrunner and executive produce with Hurd. Jacobsen will be a consulting producer.

So, it’s basically “The X-Files”? But with Mulder in a skirt?
