Expect to see some of Superman’s friends drop by in future installments of Warner Bros’ newly-rebooted ‘Superman’ franchise. Warner Bros’ Jeff Robinov – though ensuring everyone they didn’t design “Man of Steel” around a cavalcade of sequel and spin-off plans – suggests as much in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“I think you’ll see that, going forward, anything can live in this world. [Nolan’s] Batman was deliberately and smartly positioned as a stand-alone. The world they lived in was very isolated without any knowledge of any other superheroes. What Zack [Snyder] and Chris have done with this film is allow you to really introduce other characters into the same world”.
Robinov, possibly hinting at movement on the long-gestating superhero team-up movie “Justice League” (last reported to be in trouble, following the dismissal of screenwriter Will Beal’s dodgy draft of the screenplay), says “We’ll announce something in the next several weeks that will hopefully position the DC characters and the movies we’re going to be making.”
One can only assume Warners has decided it’s finally time to catch up with their inked adversary Marvel and get busy on Wonder Woman, The Flash, and… whatever else they’ve had in development (hell) for the last decade or two.
Despite the fact that it will lead to an inevitable sequel, Robinov says “Man of Steel” isn’t franchise atypical ‘sequel bait’; if it were producer Christopher Nolan would’ve removed himself from the credits block a few months back.
“One of the things we dealt with on the Batman films is, Chris dislikes it when you plan something, when you say, ‘I’m going to follow this up in the next film. He’s always said put everything you have into this film and then worry about the next film later. That gives the film it’s own integrity as opposed to being part of an overall plan. So of course the comic book fans, it’s hard not to think about [crossovers] but I, having done three Batman films and worked in that way, it’s definitely the approach we took with Man of Steel.”
As for Warner’s ‘Batman’ plans, Robinov won’t say what’s next, or when we’ll see the Caped Crusader again, but can confirm that Nolan has finished his “Dark Knight” trilogy (and neither he or Christian Bale will be involved in “Justice League”, suggesting those rumours the latter was reprising Batman are false).
”Where we go in the future is a whole other conversation”, Nolan says of the “Batman” series.
Meanwhile Legendary CEO Thomas Tull has shared his thoughts on the company’s highly-anticipated current wage provider, “Man of Steel” in an exhaustive interview with Collider.
It’s the Superman movie I’ve always wanted to see. I think the job that Zack Snyder did along with Chris Nolan- I think that people are going to be very, very excited about the results. The acting, on top of all the incredible action- Kevin Costner playing Jonathan Kent, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, just the cast, and I think the job Henry Cavill did, people are going to really be excited about it. It was a privilege to be a part of and Warner Brothers does a phenomenal job of bringing these things to life, Batman and Superman, and it really is a privilege for us to be a part of.”
Not long now and we’ll be able to find out whether Robinov and Tull are merely blowing smoke up our bloomers or have indeed crafted a ‘Superman’ movie to spur a few zillion more “Man of Steel” fanpage likes!
