“Sushi Girl” is the highly anticipated, colourful, independent feature film from the minds of writers Destin Pfaff (“Millionnaire Matchmaker”) and Kern Saxton, who also directed the project. Starring Tony Todd (“Candyman”), Noah Hathaway (“The NeverEnding Story”), James Duval (“Donnie Darko”) and Andy Mackenzie (“Days of Our Lives”), all of whom appeared at this evenings opening night of Supanova Pop Culture Expo on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
The cast and directors spoke at length of their love for this character driven film, yet really didn’t give too much of the plot away, as the film was due to premiere tonight at the Gold Coast Film Festival.
They also spoke fondly of the supporting cast, including Mark Hamill (“Star Wars”) who apparently told a lot of Star Wars stories on set.
Saxton gives a glimpse into the plot on IMDb:
“Fish has spent six years in jail. Six years alone. Six years keeping his mouth shut about the robbery, about the other men involved. The night he is released, the four men he protected with silence celebrate his freedom with a congratulatory dinner. The meal is a lavish array of sushi, served off the naked body of a beautiful young woman. The sushi girl seems catatonic, trained to ignore everything in the room, even if things become dangerous. Sure enough, the four unwieldy thieves can’t help but open old wounds in an attempt to find their missing loot.”
The writers this evening said that while they adore the film, “You’re either going to love it, or you’re going to hate it.” There are also plans to make a prequel film, and graphic novels or comic books.
Australian fans will be able to make up their own minds, when the film is released here on June 20th 2013.
“Revenge is a dish best served raw.” We left the panel in search of dinner, and found we had a craving for Sushi. Sushi Train, here we come.
