Pitch Perfect 2

Look, I’m going to say from the outset this movie won’t be for everyone. It has a clear target audience – I’m talking to you, ladies – and hits that market right in the guts. We get lots of singing, lots of dancing and a whole lot of politically-questionable one-liners. But if you can leave the snobby film critic that lives somewhere deep within us all at home and just go for a fun time, “Pitch Perfect 2” delivers a perfectly fun, at times hilarious, two hours of entertainment.

In “Pitch Perfect 2”, we catch up with the Barden Bellas three years after the events of the first film. The now reigning champs are invited to perform for the President of the United States but things go amiss when Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) quite literally flashes Obama. Of course the acapella community is disgraced and the Bellas are banned from US competition. Now their only chance at redemption is to win the international acapella competition.

I’m not going to spell out the entire plot for you – because in all honesty the plot of this film is fairly redundant, it’s really just an excuse to squeeze in as many musical numbers as possible – but here are the main points: Becca (Anna Kendrick) lands an internship at a recording studio; freshman Emily Junk (Hailee Steinfeld), aka Legacy, joins the Bellas as the rest of the group barrel toward graduation; Fat Amy and Bumper kick their romance up a notch; and the Bellas face off against German acapella champs Das Sound Machine, led by the ‘I’d turn gay for her’ Birgitte Hjort Sørensen and Youtube star Flula Borg.

This movie is no work of art, okay. In the opening scene a character called Fat Amy flashes her vagina to the President of the United States, for gods sake! The film is riddled with politically incorrect jokes that border on going too far and Snoop Dog features with his rendition of ‘Winter Wonderland’. Then again, the jokes are funny and the songs are catchy as hell, so maybe director Elizabeth Banks is an artist for managing to put all that into a film and still make it work!

If you’re having a girls night out, I couldn’t recommend “Pitch Perfect 2” highly enough. If you’ve got tweenage kids and you’re looking for a movie the whole family can enjoy, again, this would be a great film. But if you want to come out of a film feeling like you’ve just watched something significant, stay away! What can I say, “Pitch Perfect 2” is fun, it’s not refined and it sure as hell doesn’t try to be!
