Jane Got a Gun forces Relativity into bankruptcy

Staring down the barrel at bankruptcy, Relativity Studios has been forced to offload troubled western “Jane Got a Gun”- originally due for release September 4.

The original deal was for Relativity and The Weinstein Company to distribute the Natalie Portman starrer together, but now Harvey and Bob will go it alone. It’s expected that the film will now bow early 2016.

It’s been hiccup after hiccup for “Jane Got a Gun”, since it went into production. First, director Lynne Ramsay left the project a day out from production. Then Gavin O’Connor took over, but as a result Jude Law walked. Portman, Ewan McGregor, Joel Edgerton, Rodrigo Santoro and Noah Emmerich star.

Relativity has had a couple of successes, 2011’s “Immortals” and “Limitless” but even then neither film cracked $85 million domestically. Their recent crop of product – “Black and White”, “The Woman in Black 2 : Angel of Death”, “Desert Dancer” and “The Lazarus Effect” – barely kept the shingle’s head above water.

Amongst other films Relativity will have to find new homes for, “The Bronze”, “Welcome to the Punch” and “Collide”. They will still release the action-comedy “Masterminds”, starring Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, and Jason Sudeikis, which hits October 9. Their long-proposed remake of “The Crow” is apparently dead.
