“The LEGO Movie” hits cinemas in Australia next Thursday, April 3, and our Sydney correspondent Hugh Humphreys spent some time with the film’s co-director of animation, Chris McKay. McKay spent countless hours at the Animal Logic studios in Sydney editing the film with a team of 250, who have created an incredible world of LEGO that’s truly unique. His next job? even tougher! Last week, McKay was anointed director of the film’s sequel.
McKay tells Moviehole he hopes to shake the template up a bit with the sequel, comparing “Lego Movie” to Ridley Scott’s “Alien” and his upcoming sequel to James Cameron’s “Aliens”.
HH: You’ve been named as director for the sequel which must be really exciting for you.
CM: Yeah it is!
HH: Are you heartened by the fact that it’s the movie has had such an amazing response, and are you looking forward to the enormous task ahead?
CM: [Laughs] Yeah you can pretty much swing a dead cat and hit a bad sequel! And this movie is kind of a self-contained movie. So for me, what’s exciting about doing a sequel is, well I look at models like this. Ridley Scott made a really good movie with ‘Alien’, and then James Cameron came along and made a completely different movie with ‘Aliens’, and it’s kind of in the same world and at least one character that crosses over. But with LEGO – and I love difficult problems to solve, that’s probably part of it – with world-building being such a huge part of this first movie, and such a fun part of it, to be able to come back to this place where world building is literally part of the structure of it, and we can make it into anything we want, it’s exciting. We could tell the whole story in space, or go somewhere completely different, and that to me is really exciting, and that’s why I wanted to do it. It’ll be a lot of fun, and I like the challenge of that! I want the audience to ask me to prove why this movie should have a sequel.
