Not at all surprisingly, since the series is quite often mentioned hand-in-hand with the word ‘reboot’, Fox have confirmed that there’s been discussions about a reboot of ’90s sensation “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer”.
The enduring creation of Joss Whedon, “Buffy” was itself a TV spin-off of a feature film – albeit one that died a slow and painful Angelus-like death at the box-office. The series, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar in the role originated by Kristy Swanson on the big screen, became a phenomenon – spawning seven seasons, a spin-off series (“Angel”), popular comic books and novels, video games, and oodles of new babies named after the central characters and the actors that played them.
Speaking at the INTV Conference, Fox TV group chair Gary Newman agreed that “Buffy” is ripe for a comeback.
“‘Buffy’ is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back. It’s something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with. When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it. And until Joss decides its time, it won’t happen.”
With Whedon’s schedule seemingly a lot lighter now – that he’s exited “Batgirl” – this would be time to get something going, if he wills it. Ump[teen years after the original WB/UPN series came to a conclude, Whedon flirted with the idea of doing a series of telemovies and mini-series, based in the “Buffy” universe, but they never came to fruition.
“Buffy” recently celebrated it’s 21st birthday.
