Jumping on board the recent religious-themed drama trend, Steven Spielberg plans to produce and possibly direct “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara” for DreamWorks and the Weinstein Co, Variety reports.
With the screenplay written by “Lincoln” scribe Tony Kushner, “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara” is based on nonfiction book by David Kertzer about the real-life events of an Italian Jew who was taken from his parents by Papal States authorities at the age of 7 and raised as a Catholic.
It’s been quite a break for Spielberg as a director, who hasn’t stepped behind the lens since 2012’s “Lincoln”. Spielberg worked with Kushner on the film which saw Daniel Day-Lewis pick up the Oscar for Best Actor.
According to Variety, Spielberg is currently looking at potential directorial projects, tossing up between “Robopocalypse” and historical drama “Montezuma”. With “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara” still in the early stages of writing, it will not be the Hollywood legend’s next film.
