Sutherland : Flatliners is a sequel!

The cast of 1990's "Flatliners"

As predicted, what with the inclusion of original star Kiefer Sutherland, the “Flatliners” remake isn’t so much a remake as it is a sequel.

Sutherland told Metro that his character is most definitely the chap from Joel Schumacher’s 1990 original.

“I play a professor at the medical university. It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I’m the same character I was in the original Flatliners but that I have changed my name and I’ve done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film.”

Sounds silly that the filmmakers have renamed Sutherland’s character for the new film but don’t reveal that within the film. Still, Sutherland seems to think there’ll be enough evidence in the film to tip viewers off to the fact that this is indeed the same medical-nut that played with death 25 years earlier.

From what I’ve heard one of the main characters in the film is fighting to get a place at a prestigious university in the film. It’s possible Sutherland is playing the interviewing professor… but one would hope his role has a lot more meat to it.

Ellen Page, Diego Luna, James Norton, Nina Dobrev and Kiersey Clemons star in the film, directed by Niels Arden-Oplev, and produced by [original “Flatliners” producer) Michael Douglas.
