Following script issues early on, “Toy Story 4” is back on the white board over at Disney.
Stephany Folsom’s name has been scrawled with black marker on the board; announced as the new writer. The up-and-comer got the nod after Rashida Jones and her writing partner Will McCormack got the chop – their script for the sequel apparently didn’t cut muster with Walt’s troupe.
The sequel remains dated for June 21 2019.
Folsom is best known for her Black List script “1969: A Space Odyssey Or: How Kubrick Learned To Stop Worrying And Land On The Moon” but did some uncredited rewrite work on last year’s Disney-distributed “Thor Ragnarok”, which is likely how she landed this new gig at the studio.
The story was dreamt up by John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich so one imagines the script won’t be a total page one rewrite more a ‘fix it’ job.
While no cast members have been announced for the Josh Cooley-helmed “Toy Story 4”, Disney released a brief logline for the film a ways back confirming that Woody and Buzz are again the stars of the latest installment – and one can’t imagine Hanks and Allen giving up those cushy turns.
Why do a “Toy Story 4” after the terrific “Toy Story 3” -which had the perfect ending? Lassetter said “We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. ‘Toy Story 3’ ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another ‘Toy Story’ movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie”.
In an interview with the official Disney Latino blog, Jim Morris, President of Pixar Animation Studios, said the new film isn’t connected to the previous films.
“We are creating a great story. It is not a continuation of the end of Toy Story 3. It starts as one, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. There will not be so much focus on the interaction between the characters and children. The third film was a beautiful way to complete a trilogy. I don’t think this film is part of this trilogy. It is a separate story, but I don’t know if it will have a continuation. We don’t start a project with that in mind.”
