79th Annual Academy Winners – The Wrap Up

All the winners of tonight’s Oscars

I thought of doing one of those live blogs – ya know; constantly updating as the awards are handed out – but personally, I couldn’t much give two hoots about the Oscars anymore and haven’t since it became a politically-conflicted ‘Whose got the biggest?’ contest. Yeah sure, I’m interested in knowing whom wins… but blogging a never-ending awards ceremony, talking up awards for things none of you have any interest in? No thanks. I’d rather clean the dust out from the interior of my office fan.

So anyway, here we are, at the end of the big night (or day here in Australia), and with a bunch of winners well, we saw a mile away. Right?

As I mentioned on radio last week, there’s always a couple of ‘surprises’ though (they do it on purpose – ratings, ya see), and this year was no exception. I mean, did anyone actually see Alan Arkin (as great as he was in it) winning for “Little Miss Sunshine”? Dude, I thought it would be a tug-of-war between Eddie Murphy and Jackie Earl Haley… not Arkin. It’s great though. I love a good surprise. But poor Eddie hey? Anyone else think “Norbit” fucked it for him? If not him, well, it should did fuck up my night when I saw it. But, Murphy is going to be a little more in-demand now win-or-no-win…. He is, after all, ‘Academy Award Nominee’ Eddie Murphy now… not ‘Rick Baker’s Bitch, Eddie Murphy’. Lets see if he ends up doing “Beverly Hills Cop 4” now…. Wouldn’t be surprised if he suddenly has better offers on the table, now.

Loved “Little Miss Sunshine”, so was stoked that it walked away with a couple of the golden boys, too. So would’ve loved to have seen Abigail Breslin get the Best Supporting Actress… but Jennifer Hudson (“Dreamgirls”) had that as much in the bag as Sly did the steroids coming into Sydney. Seriously though, Breslin was terrific in that movie. She MADE that movie. She ALSO transformed herself. She is probably the more deserving contender here… but shucks, give it Hudson… as long as she uses the statue to plug up Simon Cowell’s twot.

I won’t fault the Academy for giving statues to Helen Mirren (“The Queen”) and Forest Whitaker (“The Last King of Scotland”) – heck, the Newspaper headline ‘King and Queen win Oscars!’ is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But in all seriousness, they were both terrific in the roles. Especially, Whitaker. I don’t know who else in their respective categories deserved it as much as them – Meryl Streep was good, sure, but she’s always good, and let’s admit it, “The Devil Wears Prada” was no more than a sugar-coated chick flick that you’ve forgotten five minutes after walking out of the theatre. My wife likes it, she says she’ll probably even watch it a couple of more times, but even she says it’s far from an Oscar worthy film and Streep wasn’t anything special in it. Streep’s been good in a lot… her turn here wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.

BUT… there was one aspect of this year’s Oscars that really got me excited. And when I heard he had won… I was giddly like Kermit the Frog opening the Muppet Show.

Martin Scorsese. Best Director. “The Departed”.

Fuck yeah. Finally. Well-deserved. This was the film of the year – and he WAS the director of the year.
I’ll be clapping for another five minutes.

And to top it off, “The Departed” wins best film too.

Ouch. My hands hurt.

It nearly reaffirms my faith in the Oscars!
