Update! Lucasfilm has denied Mel Smith’s claims that George Lucas is using computer technology to reanimate some of the stars of yesteryear for a new film project. “This is a false rumor” the company tells OnTheRedCarpet.
George Lucas has, for better or worse, always been at the forefront of computer technology. And if this latest bit is accurate, he’s about to hang onto his place in line.
In an interview with The Daily Mail, Mel Smith, who directed Lucas’s little-seen but fun “Radioland Murders”, says Lucas has been “buying up the film rights to dead movie stars in the hope of using computer trickery to put them all together in a movie, so you’d have Orson Welles and Barbara Stanwyck appear alongside today’s stars.’”
Poor Alec Guinness. Not even in death is he free from the beard’s death grip. Still, will be great to see Natalie Wood and Jack Nance again!
Hmmm. Definitely intrigued. Would love to hear more about it, if its true. I don’t know… if Smith’s harsh words for Lucas’s ‘ghastly’ “Star Wars” prequels are anything to go by, I couldn’t imagine they’re in touch too much. Smith also has a crack at Lucas overdoing CGI. Does that sound like a close buddy that’s in the loop on all of Lucas’s future projects?
Not to say it isn’t true, it could very well be, or it could be something Smith heard on the grapevine years back via am ILM tech, or, even Lucas himself, many moons ago.
Still, I’d see it. Sounds intriguing. I still remember reading in a film magazine in about 1994 that Joel Schumacher was planning to use the first full ‘CGI’ character for use in “Batman Forever”. I assume he mistook Jim Carrey for a cartoon, but never the less, we’ve come a long way in fifteen years.
