Aussie to direct Avengers origin story

Rumours of Cate Shortland directing “Black Widow” have been solidified today, with Heat Vision confirming that the Australian filmmaker is indeed onboard an origin film for Scarlett Johansson’s Avenger.

The studio, says the trade, met with “over 70 directors in order to find its ideal candidate. A female filmmaker was the priority even as the search stalled at one point and the studio looked at male helmers.”

Shortland, whose previous films include “The Berlin Syndrome” and “Somersault”, had a fan in Johansson, who loved what she did with the female lead in her 2012 film “Lore” – who pushed for the helmer.

Jac Schaeffer wrote the most recent draft for Black Widow, which is said be set before the events of the first “Avengers” movie. It is due to open March 8, 2019.
