Don’t Breathe villain boards Peter Jackson’s Mortal Engines

Stephen Lang, of “Avatar” and “Don’t Breathe” fame, has joined the cast of Peter Jackson’s “Mortal Engines”.

The “Hobbit” filmmaker is producing the film adaptation of the book series by Philip Reeve with the Oscar winning director’s protege Christian Rivers directing.

Also aboard the film are South Korean singer-actress Jihae and relative newcomer Leila George, casting that fits with the production’s plan to cast fresh faces in the project.

The four book “Mortal Engines” YA series is set in a future world devastated ecologically and technologically and where certain cities including London are run by engines and move about the Earth, giving them the ability to prey on other smaller towns for resources. The story centers on a teen named Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan in the film) who, along with a young woman from a territory known as the Outlands, uncovers a mystery that could change the world order.

While Lang’s character is being kept under wraps, George will reportedly play Katharine Valentine, daughter of one of the most powerful men in London society and one who is trying to get his hands on a weapon of mass destruction, and Jihae is Anna Fang, a member of the violent league that fights against the mobile cities.

Jackson and Fran Walsh co-wrote the script with their collaborator Philippa Boyens.
