Joy for Battlestar Galactica movie!

The long-gestating “Battlestar Galactica” movie – yep, the one that has Frak all to do with the legendary TV series (specifically the acclaimed SyFy remake) – seems to be inching closer to a Nikon.

According to Deadline, the theatrical relaunch is zeroing in on “Hunger Games : Catching Fire” helmer Francis Lawrence to direct. Lawrence, whose other credits include the effects-driven “Constantine” (the flick, not the series), would work with Lisa Joy on the film – who is scripting the latest draft of the pic. Joy, who wrote HBO’s “Westworld” redo, is also an EP on the Uni project. They’d make a good team, me thinks… but the question remains, is it too early to relaunch the beloved brand, what with Ron Moore’s beloved redo still so fresh in our minds?

The “Galactica” film – which will be produced by Bluegrass Films partners Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark alongside Michael De Luca through his Michael De Luca Productions – is purportedly the first in a new big screen franchise. Universal, as was the case back in the ’70s with the original series, are looking for their own “Star Wars”.

No word on how soon this will happen – if it all; a number of directors and other sorts have flirted with the project for years and have been unable to crack it – so don’t go rallying up your fellow “BSG” pals for a cinema outing just yet.
