Laurence Fishburne and Idris Elba are in talks to direct and star, respectively, in The Weinstein Co’s “The Alchemist”, reports Deadline.
This project has been on the sidelines for a long time, since the rights to the book were first acquired by Warner Bros in 1994. It’s no wonder Hollywood is so determined to make a film from this story; the bestselling novel has sold over 65 million copies in 56 different languages. No doubt a feature would be well received, to say the least.
But, interestingly, it would seem that author Paulo Coelho isn’t keen on the prospect of a film adaptation of his work. He took to Twitter earlier today to denounce the news:
I sold #TheAlchemist rights in 1993. One of my many mistakes in life, but 20 yrs later and no movie! #happy pic.twitter.com/tMOnEAykr5

If you read any Hollywood news on the adaptation of #TheAlchemist do not believe. They love to announce this every 2 yrs

Nonetheles, the Weinstein Co hope to get the film ready to start production next year.
