Reitman, Hudson talk new Ghostbusters

Jason Reitman, director of the upcoming “Ghosbusters” threequel, has reassured fans of the original films that this movie not only exists in the same universe but is a “love letter” to the 1984 and 1989 films.

Speaking on Bill Burr’s Monday Morning Podcast, The “Frontrunner” filmmaker reiterated the fact that he’s as big a Ghostbusters fan as anyone and so he’s making a movie for the fans, he included.

“This is going to be a love letter to Ghostbusters. I love this franchise. I grew up watching it. I consider myself the first Ghostbusters fan. I was like seven years old when that movie came out and I love it. I want to make a movie for my fellow Ghostbusters fans.”

Reitman also spoke about how easy it was to get Sony to greenlight this script – something he did not expect.

“I wrote the film in secret with my writing partner Gil Kenan. We wrote it over the last year while we were finishing up Frontrunner and we turned it in December. And I have to admit my presumption was it was going to be like any studio film that I had heard about where they do years of rewrites and they grind it into the ground and it never happens. I was fully prepared for this year to be a year of maybe taking a little time off and doing rewrites on Ghostbusters and instead, the studio read the first draft and said ‘yeah go make it.’”

While a casting search is underway to find the film’s young leads, it’s expected that original stars Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray will all return to reprise their roles from the original films.

“We really just had a general conversation,” Hudson, in an interview with Den of Geek, says about Jason Reitman. “Every now and then I’ll hear from Ivan Reitman or Jason, so when I heard that Jason was doing the movie I gave him a call. They just said that it would be more in the tradition of the original Ghostbusters, whatever that may mean.”

Adds the actor, “Obviously it would be a great job if I was included, but they didn’t exclude the possibility that it could happen either. So, so far nothing’s come across my desk, but I’ve always let them and the studio know that I’m open to appearing!”

If you can’t wait until Summer 2020 to get your next “Ghostbusters” fix, you might be keen on attending the first-ever “Ghostbusters” Fan Fest which Ghost Gorps and Wizard World have announced will be happening over the weekend of June 7 and 8.

Aykroyd and Hudson will be at the event, which will be held on the Sony Pictures Studio Lot in Culver City.

Says the press release, “Fans will have a chance to meet members of the Ghostbusters cast, filmmakers and crew and hear about behind the scenes stories. They will also get access to exclusive programming and attractions, limited edition merchandise, collectibles and so much more!”
