Singer sticks Sword in Stone

Bryan Singer is about to stick his sword in….. er, a stone.

The “X-Men” and “Superman Returns” director has inked a deal to produce and possibly direct a remake of the 1981 gem “Excalibur”. The project will reunite Singer with Warner, with whom he made the “Superman” reboot.

The news that Singer may direct “Excalibur 2.0” comes as the filmmaker gets serious about making the New Line-Legendary co-production “Jack the Giant Killer” his next directing effort, according to sources. Singer also recently signed to direct a big-screen revival of TV fave “Battlestar Galactica”. And if he isn’t busy enough already, the filmmaker is, according to the trade, circling “X Men : The First Class” – a prequel to his sensational “X-Men” (But I won’t believe he’s truly interested in returning to the franchise until I hear it from his, de Santo’s, or Jackman’s mouth).

“Excalibur” is the quintessential myth-of-King-Arthur film, complete with the enchanted sword, the Knights of the Round Table, Merlyn the wizard and the quest for the Holy Grail to save Arthur’s life. The original film was directed by John Boorman and adapted from the Thomas Malory book by Rospo Pallenberg and Boorman.Liam Neeson and Helen Mirren were among the cast of the flick.
