The Enterprise running on Hot Fuzz! Updated!

Brit comic signs for “Star Trek”

Update! : According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Harold and Kumar” star John Cho has also won a role in the film – playing none other than Sulu, the Enterprise’s helmsman.

“Star Trek” has just been officially shoved to the top of my ‘must see’ movie list for 2007. It seems to be doing everything it can to make sure it doesn’t become the next, er, “Star Trek : Nemesis”. My applause is mostly in the direction of casting directors, April Webster and Alyssa Weisberg, who seems intent on casting the best actors for each role – Zachary Quinto as young Spock is just spot-on! – not necessarily going for the biggest names, or those sleeping with the executive producers. Like my mother-in-law likes her meat, that’s ‘bloody rare’.

Now this is frickin’ genius – – – Simon Pegg, the funnyman behind the perfect piss-takes “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz”, has been chosen to play ‘Scotty’ in J.J Abram’s new “Star Trek” flick. Now had stellar is that? And don’t you be writing in with no ‘But he’s not Scottish!’ emails either… because Jimmy Doohan wasn’t either. Pegg had a small role in J.J Abrams’ “Mission : Impossible III” and I recall Abrams telling me once that the highlight of any of his days is when the Brit comic shoots him an email, so it’s no surprise to hear that he’s given the role to him. But he’s also the right choice for the role too. So, good.

Pegg joins Eric Bana, Anton Yelchin, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Leonard Nimoy in the latest bigscreen incarnation of the classic TV series.

Today, Moviehole also revealed the budget of the film – which you can view here.
