The Last King of Star Trek

James McAvoy as a young Scotty?

Greg Grunberg has just invested in a shovel, bag of dirt and rented pick-up truck for the weekend.

According to The Sunday Mail, via our friends at IGN Movies, “Last King of Scotland” star James McAvoy might be in line to wear the of the Enterprise’s Scotty.

Yep, according to the ever-so-trusty (Tomorrow’s Headline : Tom Cruise to play new ‘Terminator’) British paper, the Scottish actor is top of the pops to take on the role made famous by the late James Doohan in the upcoming “Star Trek” prequel. Fittingly, there’s no comment from J.J Abrams, Paramount, William Shatner or Christopher Lloyd’s brother-in-law to back up the claim.

“[The studio] thinks [McAvoy] could form a brilliant double act with Matt [Damon, rumored to play Kirk],” said the Sunday Mail’s source. “James’s star is on the rise after The Last King of Scotland. He’s Scottish and has box-office appeal, so he fulfills both criteria.”

Yep, they’re assuming Matt Damon is going to play Kirk, too. Now, as far as I know, Damon hasn’t been contacted about the role, and his link to the film merely exists on the IMDB message boards or fan forums. Though I’m sure he’d be great in the role – if J.J Abrams asked him to do it. But…I don’t know… something tells me that they’re going to go for a fresher-face for that role… probably Spock, too.

But back to McAvoy. Yeah; I can see him as Scotty. He has the accent. He’s the right age (I assume). We know he’s a good performer – he was great in “King of Scotland”, and memorable in “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe” – and a versatile one at that.

I seriously think the only person you can one-hundred-percent say is attached to play a role in the new “Trek” is Abrams’ buddy, Greg Grunberg. Even if it’s just an officer… or a slimebag under make-up…. Grunberg is guaranteed to a role. He has, after all, appeared in everything else Abrams’ has done.

The actor – currently appearing on TV hit “Heroes” – tells RottenTomatoes.com that he’ll soon see the script. “He’s finalizing the script right now so I just talked to him today and he said, ‘I’ll send it to you as soon as it’s done’ so hopefully it’ll be very soon. I’d love to be a Vulcan, it’d be great. That would be incredible. I don’t want to sit through too much makeup though. That’s the one thing I’m worried about but we’ll see”.

And for me, how about giving T’Pol a cameo? Even if we simply see her in the background in a sequence set in the female shower block?
