The Lion King and The Beanstalk

James Earl Jones is ‘Giant’ in new family film

Who better to voice a giant than the man with the biggest voice of all? James Earl Jones!

The “Star Wars” and “Lion King” legend will lend his lungs to a new version of “Jack and the Beanstalk” that make-up and effects wizard Gary J.Tunnicliffe (“Feast”, “Dracula 2 : The Ascension”) is directing for Avalon Family Films, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Also joining the film are Chevy Chase (in a small role as the keeper of a labyrinth Jack must traverse to meet the giant), “Lost” star Daniel Roebuck (the mayor of Jack’s hometown), “Married with Children” fave Katy Sagal (the concerned mother of Jack), “Clueless” co-star Wallace Shawn (the pawnbroker who sells Jack his magic beans), funnyman Gottfried (The goose that lays the Golden Eggs) and “Back to the Future” legend Christopher Lloyd (a stern headmaster of a school that Rapunzel, Prince Charming, Jack and other well-known characters attend.) Newcomer Colin Ford will play Jack.

It sounds like the low-budget family film might be a bit of fun – its taking a page out of the “Shrek” book by taking the mickey out of the fairytale, while referencing some of the other great literary classics.

“There are winks and nods to pop culture and other fairy tales that adults will also enjoy,” said co-writer Flip Kobler.
It’ll be interesting to see how horror vet Tunnicliffe fares behind the camera – this is definitely new terrain for him. Whatever the case, he sounds excited about doing the picture.

“It’s good not to have blood on the set,” he said, laughing. “The big fight is a pillow fight.”
