Hall, De Niro onboard Midnight Run 2

Classic ’80s action-comedy finally gets a follow-up

Umpteen years after Bobby De Niro and Jane Rosenthal first toyed with the idea of doing a proper sequel (there were a bunch of telemovies, with Christopher McDonald playing Jack Walsh, but they’re pretty forgettable), the “Midnight Run” sequel is back on Universal’s dance card.

Regina Hall, star of “Girls Trip”, “Little”, and “Nine Perfect Strangers” (though likely best remembered for her role as the ever-annoying ‘Brenda Meeks’ in the “Scary Movie” films), will star.

According to Deadline, this one is a sequel. De Niro and Rosenthal are mentioned as producing so it’s probably safe to assume that the Oscar winning actor will be back as everyone’s favourite bounty hunter. Maybe Hall is playing Alonzo Mosely’s offspring? or maybe works for the now elder Walsh’s Bail Bonds agency, like the one he was employed by in the Marty Brest original?

Aeysha Carr (“Woke,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) wrote the screenplay for this latest one.

Back when “Midnight Run 2” was in development about a decade ago, De Niro was going to star along with John Ashton back as Marvin Dorfler.  Brett Ratner was attached to direct.

The script, by David Elliot and Paul Lovett, would’ve seen Walsh teamed with the son of Charles Grodin‘s embezzler from the first film.

It’s possible this is the screenplay that Carr is reworking for Hall, with the latter playing the daughter of ‘The Duke’?

The original 1988 comedy, which starred De Niro and the late Grodin, was a smash with critics going on to become a bonafide cult classic.
