How close are we to Top Gun 3 and Face/Off 2 becoming a reality?

One of those films will likely happen before the other

Monica Barbaro and Tom Cruise on the set of Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

While a Top Gun 3 is looking very possible, a Face/Off sequel – rumoured for a while now – seems to be closer to becoming a reality.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said there’s talk of Tom Cruise reprising Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell for a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick but he’s leaving the decision up to the actor.

The uber producer tells The Wrap that :

A lot of people talk about it. […] But Tom is off doing two ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies and he’s out there risking his life as he usually does, unfortunately. But we haven’t had a discussion with him about it yet. […] You always like to make movies that entertain audiences, if we can come up with a way to bring another one back, of course. Why wouldn’t we? Look, it took us 35/36 years to get this one done. You never know.

A while back it was confirmed that Adam Wingard was developing a Face/Off sequel, which the is collaborating on with regular sidekick Simon Barrett. The duo had hoped to present their top-secret script to the stars of the original 1997 film, John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, to see if they could lure them back to reprise their roles for the film. Seems they’ve had a read…

Collider recently caught up with Cage who seemingly spoilt the plot, revealing the sequel will see the children of his and Travolta’s respective Castor Troy and Sean Archer characters swapping faces with their offspring and themselves :

I think Face/Off is a sequel that lends itself to a lot of twists and turns and unpredictability. It’s almost like if you factor in the idea of offspring and Castor and Sean having children and these children grow up, then it becomes like three-dimensional chess, and then it’s not just the two, John Travolta and myself, it’s four of us ping-ponging and going at different levels, and it becomes even more complex. I think there’s a lot of fertile ground there. I had maybe one meeting in an office, but I haven’t heard anything since, so I don’t know.

Barrett confirmed that Cage did indeed reveal the plot – but he’s rapt he likes it.
