Disney announces a slate of new animated sequels!

Your old favourites return – to help Disney make up for Strange Planet’s losses

After the dismal returns on Strange Planet last year, no surprise here. Disney have announced new sequels to Toy Story, Frozen, and Zoolander are on the way – joining the roster of sequels currently in productions at the studio, like Inside Out 2 and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the projects on today’s Q1 earnings call.

“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia,” Iger said. “We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”

For those counting that’ll be the fifth Toy Story (which star Tim Allen has confirmed he’s officially onboard for), the third Frozen, and the second Zoolander.

The sequel stuff came in the wake of bad news at the studio, namely that 7,000 jobs are getting cut.
