Bad luck Harold and Kumar, Jaden Smith’s about to remind young America that he’s the one and only current Karate Kid.
A sequel to the 2010 remake of “The Karate Kid”, starring Smith and Jackie Chan, is on the way. Zak Penn, who wrote “X2” and “X-Men : The Last Stand”, is on scripting duties.
Now while I’m not mad about it, I’ll admit that that the remake of one of my favourite films of the early ’80s wasn’t too bad – the script was good, the performances were good, and the action sequences were well-choreographed. Did it encompass that warm-and-fuzzy magical bolt of lightning that struck our spines back in ’84? Nope, Sadly not. As such, I’m with Harold and Kumar – Ralph Macchio will forever be The Karate Kid.
As for the sequel to the remake, it’ll all depend on the script. Penn’s best work, I believe, is the stuff he did on the “X-Men” movies and “Behind Enemy Lines” (he also worked on “The Avengers”, but since nobody’s seen it yet, the jury’s still out on that one), and also a little comedy gem he penned back in the early ’90s called “PCU”, but the rest of his credits are mostly garbage (“Last Action Hero”, “Elektra”, “Incident at Loch Ness”, “Suspect Zero”, “Inspector Gadget”) so the film may be stashed or trashed based on his effort.
And if someone young wannabe rap-star is hired to rejig Peter Cetera’s “The Glory of Love” for the sequel soundtrack, I’ll be on the rampage. With the Crane move in tow.
