Kurt Russell may play his own dad in Baseball flick

It was announced earlier today that “Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin will produce a feature film based on the new documentary “Battered Bastards of Baseball”. That movie, which screened at Sundance earlier in the week, tells of Bing Russell (Kurt Russell’s father), who in 1973 created the only independent baseball team in America at the time, the Portland Mavericks.

According to Variety, Lin – also attached to direct the next installment in the “Bourne” series – will self-finance and produce the feature. Todd Field (“In the Bedroom”) is in talks to write and direct.

Kurt Russell, on hand at Sundance to stump the documentary on his father, tells Collider that he’ll likely be getting involved in the feature version.

“‘Would I be one of the people that I would be considering to play Bing Russell?’ I have yes’ and no’s. What I think is kind of cool is that everybody talks about that now, if that happens”, says the actor. “In the last three days, obviously for the reasons you asked, I’ve started thinking about it more, and maybe we’ll be forced to think about it further… There’ll be lots of people that I think in my mind [are possibilities] to play different people, but you can’t not think about it. And after seeing this, you can’t not say it’s compelling.”

Russell actually followed in his father’s footsteps there for a while, becoming a minor league baseball player.
