Saddle up folks, this is one movie you’ll want to sit tight for. Make sure you limit your soft drink intake and hit the bathroom immediately before viewing, as you don’t want to miss one second of the events of “Avengers: Infinity War”. Don’t worry, we’re a thoughtful outlet and you won’t see any spoilers below – so read on without any hesitation.
“Avengers: Infinity War” picks up after the events of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Captain America: Civil War”, and includes an amazing lineup of all your favourite Marvel faces. “Infinity War” sees the heroes focus their attention on Thanos (Josh Brolin), who is after the 6 infinity stones that his pawns had unsuccessfully chased in “Age of Ultron”.
Thanos gains power with every stone he collects, which will ultimately end in the demise of the universe should he collect all 6. As each team fights to save themselves, their planets but also seek revenge, they all come together to work as one to beat the gigantic and seemingly immortal Thanos. As far as villains go, Thanos is one with a difference: he has heart. His intentions are not just about destruction, and though he has to make some tough decisions, he still holds love in his heart for family.
As Bruce Banner/The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) struggles with performance anxiety, Gamora (Zoe Saldana) fighting family loyalty and the Rocket/Groot (Bradley Cooper/Vin Diesel) duo as cute as ever, “Avengers: Infinity War” offers so much more than just people donning superhero costumes in an attempt to save the world.
The best part of “Infinity War” is the different Marvel worlds colliding in perfect succession, without losing a beat in tone. The “Guardians” crew remain as quirky and off-beat as expected, led by cockeyed optimist Starlord (Chris Pratt). The Avengers crew remain tight knit, with Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) hesitantly working alongside Dr Strange aka “The Wizard” (Benedict Cumberbatch) and mentored Spider-man/Peter Parker (Tom Holland). Captain America (Chris Evans) and crew come in all guns blazing, ready to offer their part and the Black Panther/T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and his Wakandan crew are ready to fight for their country. Even as they cross into each others “worlds”, they blend together perfectly, creating an entertaining and powerful team.
Unlike “Justice League”, the combination of each element isn’t forced, and multiple battles all occur at the same time – without appearing confusing or unnecessary. The film, clocking in at just under 3 hours, never seems to drag, instead is absolutely gripping from the very first second to the end of credits scene (yes – please do stick around for this one).
The Russo brothers have created a masterpiece in “Infinity War”, bringing together a Marvel reunion worthy of its runtime – and of course a follow-up film, due out next year.
