Daniel Craig to play “a new Poirot” in Rian Johnson mystery

“Star Wars : The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson will direct Daniel Craig in “Knives Out”, a contemporary murder mystery that will see the James Bond star play a detective assigned to solve the crime.

The film will shoot in November, while Bond 25 scrambles to find a new director following the recent exit of Danny Boyle.

“Knives’s Out”, which Johnson also wrote, is described as “a modern day murder mystery in the classic whodunit style, infused with Johnson’s original voice that informed films from Brick to Looper.”

The film will be offered up at this week’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Johnson will produce alongside partner Ram Bergman.

“I have been a huge fan and always wanted to work with him and as I worked on the script, trying to get it right, Ram and I were wringing our hands over who could be the detective,” Johnson tells Deadline. “Then, serendipitously, we heard Daniel might have a small window, and it worked out. He’s an actor of extraordinary range, and we are looking forward to the fun of finding that modern detective, and collaborating with Daniel on creating a new Poirot.”
