TV Casting : Magnum P.I., Sabrina The Teenage Witch and LA Confidential

There’s a new Magnum in town, with Jay Hernandez tapped to star as Thomas Magnum in CBS’s reboot pilot of “Magnum P.I.”. Tom Selleck made the role famous in the original series, in which a decorated ex-Navy SEAL, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator.

Hernandez has recently been seen in both “Bad Moms” films, “Suicide Squad” and Netflix’s “Bright”. Justin Lin is set to direct and executive produce the pilot. Via Variety.

Miranda Otto has been cast as Aunt Zelda in Netflix’s upcoming take on “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”. Otto will star as Zelda Spellman, Sabrina’s aunt, alongside previously cast Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina and Lucy Davis as Sabrina’s other aunt, Hilda.

Per the Deadline report, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” is based on the Archie Comics characters, and is a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Exorcist”, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

So expect something a lot darker than the 90s version, which had Melissa Joan Hart in a fairly jovial series.

Walter Goggins has nabbed a starring role in the “LA Confidential” adaptation pilot set for CBS. Goggins will play Det. Jack Vincennes, who was originally played by Kevin Spacey in the 1997 film of the same name.

Per the report at Variety, Det. Vincennes is all swagger and flash with a movie star smile, Jack knows how the system works and uses it to his best advantage, including some corrupt shakedowns on the side.

The TV adaptation is a modern take on James Ellroy’s novel, which was also the basis for the ’97 film. In it the paths of three homicide detectives, a female reporter and an up-and-coming actress intersect while the detectives pursue a sadistic serial killer among the secrets and lies of gritty, glamorous 1950’s Los Angeles.
