In-demand British thesp Benedict Cumberbatch will don the I.D of the Sorcerer Supreme.
Marvel has announced that the fanboy fave of “Sherlock”, “Star Trek Into Darkness”, and “The Hobbit” is adding ‘superhero franchise’ to his impressive CV, signing on to play magical Steve in hefty-priced blockbuster “Doctor Strange”.
Cumberbatch mightn’t have been the first pick for the role of the Marvel superhero (it’d seem Joaquin Phoenix was the studio’s top pick, but negotiations didn’t work out) but he’s definitely more-than-capable of weaving some magic on director Scott Derrickson’s comic book movie debut.
Jared Leto, Tom Hardy, Justin Theroux, Ethan Hawke and Keanu Reeves were previously rumoured to be in the mix for the Strange gig.
The character of Doctor Strange, who made his debut in the comics more than 50 years ago, helps defend Earth against mystical threats. So.. yes, like this guy.
“Doctor Strange” is skedded for a July 8, 2016 bow.
